The 2020 presidential election was a contest between the two Janus-like faces of American capitalism. On the one side was the angry, raging face of new right populism fueled by the money of extractive industries, state and local banks, hard industry, and Chambers of Commerce. On the other side was Joe Biden.
On October 8, Senator Mike Lee tweeted the following: “We’re not a democracy.” Senator Lee, in this particular case, is correct. The Constitutional Convention of 1787 intended the United States to be a nondemocratic republic which would protect the interests of a very small group of people over the majority of the citizenry.
