As the election nears, we remain unequivocal: a second Trump term would be catastrophic for our class.
Let’s look at the bigger picture.
We live in a world where every day, in order to survive, we have to sell off a little piece of ourselves. Our lives are mired in misery, and the defining characteristic of our days is often a constant claw against that. More than 30 million people lost their jobs since the pandemic started. Millions of people lost their health care. Many of our members, loved ones, and organizing allies can be counted in both of those groups.
More than 200,000 people have died of COVID-19. Who knows how many weren’t counted. Who knows how many more have died of diseases that were perfectly preventable or treatable, but went un-prevented and untreated because our healthcare system works to make money for a few at the expense of the lives of everyone else. We live in a society where racism translates Black and Brown lives into victims of state terrorism by way of the police, and white supremacy obscures the basic humanity of people.
Regardless of what happens in November, this will all still be true.
No capitalist government will ever achieve dignity and freedom for all. Only a socialist movement rooted in the heart of the working class and led by the working class can defend our people, save our environment, and lay the foundation for the liberation of humanity.
Capitalism deprives us of our full humanity; through the struggle for socialism, we reclaim parts of it.
So, no matter what happens, we have to build our socialist movement, so that we can continue the struggle against austerity; the struggle to defund the police; the struggle to win a Green New Deal; the struggle to win Medicare for All. We have to build our socialist movement so that we can win power for our class — in our neighborhoods, in our cities, in our workplaces.
As we come together in this moment, we must remember the words of Marta Harnecker: our [socialist] politics is not driven by what others say is possible; it is driven by the art making the impossible possible. The future is very much in play. It’s ours if we fight for it.
